Vocabulary — Grade 8
FlyingMinds Iowa Test Prep — original, advanced practice built by FlyingMinds to help you become a critical thinker and pass the test
practice + challenge + 4 writing — far more practice than Testing Mom's Grade 8 vocabulary set
Question types
Synonyms · antonyms · sentence completion · context clues · word parts (Greek/Latin roots) · multiple-meaning words · analogies · shades of meaning & connotation
Words
Rich Grade 8 (Sadlier-style) words woven across every section — many appear in more than one category to teach their different meanings
How it's upgraded
The PROCESS for tackling each question type is taught first; Fred shows the reasoning and the trap on every answer
Before you practice: Grade 8 vocabulary rewards strategy. Learn the PROCESS for each question type, then practice — and watch for rich words that have more than one meaning.
📌 FlyingMinds rule: Predict first, eliminate the clearly-wrong choices, then pick the BEST fit. Always ask, "Could this word mean something else?"
🟢 Synonyms & 🔵 antonyms
Synonyms mean the SAME (swap test). Antonyms are OPPOSITES — flip the meaning and beware of choices that mean the same.
🟡 Sentence completion & context clues
Read the whole sentence and predict the missing word. For a hard word, hunt for clues: a definition, an example, a contrast (but, unlike), or an action/feeling.
Words like contend, scuttle, hamper, probe, quarry, breach, legion, diffuse, hew, and wane have two or more meanings. Test each meaning in the sentence to find the match.
🟢 Analogies
'A is to B as C is to ___.' Decide the relationship — synonyms, opposites, degree, or thing→trait — then match it.
🎯 Connotation & precise words
Some words feel positive or negative (diligent vs plodding; eminent vs notorious). Pick the most exact word for the meaning AND the feeling.
🔮 WARM-UP · NOT SCORED
🦉 Fred asks: What is your first step when a word has more than one possible meaning?
Starter: First I will __________ because __________ .
🎯 Practice score:0 / 84
