Words
Rich Grade 4 (Sadlier-style) words woven across every section — many appear in more than one category to teach their different meanings
How it's upgraded
The PROCESS for tackling each question type is taught first; Fred shows the reasoning and the trap on every answer
Before you practice: Vocabulary questions reward smart strategy, not just memorizing. Learn the PROCESS for each kind of question, then practice — the same rich words show up in more than one way, so watch for words with more than one meaning.
📌 FlyingMinds rule: Predict first, then check the choices. Always ask, "Could this word have another meaning?"
🟢 Synonyms — the Swap Test
1) Read the phrase. 2) Predict a meaning. 3) Swap each choice in. 4) Keep the one that means the SAME. Watch for a choice that is the OPPOSITE — a common trap.
🔵 Antonyms — flip it
1) Know the word's meaning. 2) Picture the opposite. 3) Eliminate choices that mean the same. The answer is the reverse idea.
🟡 Sentence completion — predict the blank
1) Read the WHOLE sentence. 2) Cover the choices and predict the missing word. 3) Try each choice. 4) Pick the best fit, not just an okay one.
🔵 Context clues — let the sentence teach you
Look for four clue types: a definition, an example, a contrast (but, unlike), or an action/feeling that shows the meaning.
🟣 Word parts — break it apart
Split the word into prefix + root + suffix. Useful parts: un–/dis–/mis– (not/wrong), trans– (across), e–/ex– (out), –able/–ible (able to), –ous (full of), –ive (tending to), –ity (quality of). Roots: port (carry), vert (turn).
⚪ Multiple-meaning words — try each meaning
Many words have two or more meanings (blunt, span, bluff, monarch, document, convert, reject, transport). 1) See how the word is used in the example. 2) Put that SAME meaning into each choice. 3) Match the use.
🟢 Analogies — name the relationship
Read 'A is to B as C is to ___.' First decide HOW A and B connect — synonyms, opposites, or part-to-whole — then make C and the answer connect the same way.
