Once upon a time, an old man planted a tiny 1 turnip seed in his garden. He patted the soil and gave it water. "Grow, little turnip, grow!" he said.

Every day, the sunlight shone down. Every day, the old man gave it water. A tiny green sprout poked out of the ground. It grew and grew. The root pushed deep into the earth. The turnip got bigger. And bigger. And BIGGER! Soon it was enormous — the biggest turnip anyone had ever seen.

One sunny morning, the old man said, "It is time to pick my turnip!" He wrapped his hands around the big green leaves. He pulled and pulled. But the turnip would not budge!

"Help me, please!" called the old man. His old wife came running. "I will help you!" she said. The old woman held the old man. The old man held the turnip. They pulled and pulled. But the turnip would not budge!

What IS a turnip? A turnip is a real vegetable that people eat. It is round and white, with a little purple top. It grows T1 underground, just like a carrot or potato. The part you can see above the ground is just the leafy green top. The big round root hides in the soil!

How do turnips grow? First, a farmer plants tiny turnip seeds in soft soil. The seeds need water and sunlight to wake up. A green sprout pushes UP toward the sun. At the same time, the root pushes DOWN into the soil. As weeks pass, the root gets bigger and rounder. After about two months, it is ready to eat!

Turnips around the world. People in many countries eat turnips. In Russia, where our story comes from, people put turnips in soup and stew. In Japan, people pickle turnips and eat them with rice. In England, families have eaten turnips for hundreds of years. Turnips can taste a little sweet and a little spicy — kids often like them best when they are roasted or mashed.

Can turnips really grow ENORMOUS? In the story, the turnip was so big it took six helpers to pull out! In real life, most turnips are about the size of a baseball. But sometimes, with the right soil and lots of rain, turnips can grow really big. The world's biggest turnip ever weighed more than 17 kilograms — heavier than a big dog! So maybe the story is not so silly after all.

Teamwork is everywhere. When two or more people work together to get a job done, that is called T2 teamwork. We see teamwork all over the place — at home, at school, in sports, and even in nature! The story of the enormous turnip shows teamwork too. One person could not pull the turnip alone. But together? They did it!

Ants are amazing team workers. Have you ever seen ants moving a big crumb? One tiny ant cannot lift a crumb by herself — it is too heavy! But ants don't give up. They call MORE ants. Teamwork at home. When your family cleans up after dinner, that is teamwork. One person clears the table. One washes dishes. One sweeps the floor. If only one person had to do it ALL, it would take forever! But when everyone pitches in — even the youngest helper — the job is done fast.

Teamwork in sports and school. In soccer, one player cannot win the game alone. Every kid on the team has a job. In school, kids work together on projects, share crayons, and help each other read. What is a folk tale? A T3 folk tale is a very old story that people have told for hundreds of years. Long ago, before there were many books, grown-ups told stories to their children at bedtime or around the fire. The children grew up and told the same stories to THEIR children. That is how a folk tale travels — from mouth to mouth, year after year.

Why does Russia have so many folk tales? Russia is a very big country far away. The winters there are long and very, very cold. Long ago, families would sit close by a warm stove all winter long.
